Full Day Tour to Matera and Altamura from Bari, 1 Day

Departure at 9:00 AM from the Petruzzelli Theater in Bari, destination Matera, approximately 1 hour by car from Bari.

In Matera, we will have a 2-hour walking tour and visit this cave city, an incredible and unique place on the hills of Murgia. Its historic center, carved into a deep ravine, is the first UNESCO site in southern Italy, where people lived in cave houses from prehistoric times until 1952. We can wander through the narrow alleys and paths of centuries-old history in two marvelous districts called the Sassi. We will visit rock churches with Byzantine frescoes, cave dwellings, as well as the medieval cathedral and the noble quarter of this ancient city known as the “Italian Bethlehem,” where many films have been shot, including “The Passion” directed by Mel Gibson.

After the walking tour, you will have 1 hour of free time for shopping and lunch on your own. There are many typical restaurants in the historic center.
Leaving Matera, we will reach Altamura after 30 minutes. Located in a dominant position on the hills of Murgia, within a national park, Altamura has a very interesting historic center with a large medieval cathedral famous for its richly decorated stone portal. Known for its typical local bread, defined as the best in Italy and bearing the high-quality DOP mark, Altamura has many stone ovens where we can taste the typical dishes of this city of wheat!

At 3:00 PM, we will leave Altamura to reach Bari at 4:00 PM.
